A dentist, also called a cosmetic dentist, is a dental doctor who specializes not only in dentistry but also in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of oral illnesses and diseases. The dentists work in the field with the help of assistants, hygienists, therapists and receptionists. They usually have to deal with patients of different ages, from infants to adults. The dental assistant is the person who works with the dentists, especially during checkups. The dental hygienist is the person who takes care of patients’ oral hygiene, while the therapists provide the patient with dental services and the dentist provides emergency oral healthcare. There are many states where a dentist can get his state license to practice dentistry after completing the required courses. However, to practice dentistry in every state, a dentist needs to get an equivalent to the minimum education and experience requirement of that particular state. For instance, in some states, a dentist needs to get an equivalent of four years of graduate school or an MD degree from an accredited educational institution. Those states which do not require a license to practice dentistry also allow dentists to get the license by attending an approved dentists residency program.
